ChatGPT Adds Full-Screen Mode for Long-Form Editing, With Library Saving Support

On June 1, 2026, OpenAI's official ChatGPT account announced a new feature that lets users write and edit long-form text in full screen. Edited long-form text can be saved to the Library and recalled later to continue working.

What Happened

The official ChatGPT account (@ChatGPTapp) announced on X an update designed to make long-form writing more comfortable by providing more space. Specifically, the update lets users edit longer text in full screen, save it to the Library, and resume later. A demo video was also attached.

The feature names are "full-screen editing" and "Library." While the rollout appears to be centered on the web version, the Library itself supports web, iOS, and Android. The official release notes do not yet mention this feature, making it likely that the rollout is still in progress.

Background and Significance

ChatGPT had previously offered the "Canvas" mode for editing long-form text or code alongside the chat, which later evolved into "Writing Blocks / Code Blocks." Around May 2026, Canvas was deprecated for some models, and the migration to the new approach has been advancing.

In parallel, the "Library" feature was developed to centrally manage files as well as documents and images created within ChatGPT. According to CNET, the Library was initially introduced for Plus/Pro/Business users, and on May 14 it was expanded to Free/Go users. Storage limits are reportedly 500MB for Free, 4GB for Go, 20GB for Plus/Business, and 100GB for Pro, and it also supports integration with search and the Memory feature (CNET).

This announcement can be positioned as a productivity-boosting measure that combines such "wide editing space" with "persistent storage and reuse." It appears to be aimed at differentiation from competing features such as Claude's Artifacts, as well as a response to user feedback such as "long-form text is hard to edit" and "past outputs can't be found."

Reactions

With the post coming right after the announcement, reactions are still limited, but there are voices praising the Library integration. One user noted that text can be saved to the Library in full screen and synced and updated both inside and outside conversations, pointing out that this resolves Canvas's issues such as "can't search" and "don't know which conversation it was in."

On the other hand, there are also usability concerns such as "during full-screen editing, the chat screen is not visible, making it hard to reference past discussions" and "there is only a Make changes box, making it hard to ask flexible questions." Canvas was originally well received as a ProseMirror-based editor for its editing shortcuts, but its lack of persistence and searchability was considered an issue, so how far this update addresses that is drawing attention.
