AI Firms and Investors Commit About $275M in Super PAC Funds to 2026 US Midterms

AI companies and investors have committed roughly $275 million in super PAC funding to the 2026 US midterm elections, according to a July 1 episode of Bloomberg's The Big Take podcast. The spending has turned regulatory policy into a proxy fight the podcast describes as the "first AI election."

The dispute centers on differing industry positions. Anthropic, which emphasizes AI safety, is forming a super PAC network to back candidates who support cautious regulation, while OpenAI-aligned groups such as the Leading the Future PAC support candidates prioritizing rapid development to compete with China, according to The New York Times.

Anthropic has contributed $20 million to the 501(c)(4) group Public First Action and raised $50 million across affiliated groups, with a further $25 million planned. The broader AI super PAC network has reportedly spent more than $37 million in 2026 congressional primaries, including about $700,000 on ads supporting Rep. Valerie Foushee in North Carolina's 4th District.

Anthropic / Claude Fable 5

Anthropic Restores Global Access to Claude Fable 5 After US Lifts Export Controls

Anthropic said on July 1 that the US Commerce Department has lifted export controls on its top models Claude Fable 5 and Claude Mythos 5, allowing it to resume global availability of Fable 5. Both models launched around June 9, but on June 12 the Trump administration's Commerce Department imposed export restrictions citing national security, requiring licenses for access by foreign governments, companies and individuals, including foreign Anthropic employees.

Because Anthropic could not verify nationality in real time, it suspended access for all users worldwide for about 18 days. The trigger was a warning that Fable 5's safety guardrails could be bypassed to reach Mythos-class unrestricted capabilities, prompting concern from Amazon CEO Andy Jassy and a reported NSA review.

For the restart, Anthropic added a new classifier that it says blocks more than 99% of cybersecurity-related tasks. Fable 5 is being redeployed globally via claude.ai, the API and Claude Code with a temporary 50% weekly usage cap through July 7, while the more capable Mythos 5 remains limited to vetted US partners and critical-infrastructure organizations.

Anthropic / Agent Arena

Claude Fable 5 Returns to Arena and Leads Agent Arena at 13.34% Net Improvement

Claude Fable 5 rejoined Arena.ai's leaderboards on July 1 after being removed on June 12 during the export-control suspension. On the Agent Arena leaderboard, Claude Fable 5 (High) recorded a Net Improvement of 13.34% (±1.55%) across 16,082 sessions, ahead of Claude Opus 4.8 (Thinking) at 9.37% and GPT-5.5 (xHigh) at 8.21%.

Agent Arena measures multi-step agent performance on millions of real user-submitted tasks that involve tools such as web search, file systems and terminals, rather than synthetic benchmarks. Fable 5 also led on quality-related metrics, with 16.12% Confirmed Success, 30.63% Praise vs Complaint and a 1.31% Tool Hallucination rate, and posted a large lead in Code Arena: Frontend. It scored 88% on FrontierMath Tier 4.

Alongside the return, Anthropic's Sonnet 5 became available on Databricks across AWS, Azure and GCP, showing top-tier results in agentic search and document AI extraction benchmarks. Some developers cautioned that gains since Opus 4.6 have felt incremental.

Google DeepMind / Gemini

Google DeepMind Launches Gemini Omni Flash Video Editing and Nano Banana 2 Lite Image Model

Google DeepMind released Gemini Omni Flash, a conversational video editing model, and Nano Banana 2 Lite (Gemini 3.1 Flash Lite Image), a fast, low-cost image generator, making both available through the API and AI Studio.

Omni Flash performs VFX edits on existing video from a single text prompt in seconds, such as swapping objects or replacing items in a scene. Nano Banana 2 Lite ranks 7th on Image Arena with an Elo of 1271, generating images in about 4-5 seconds at roughly 3.5 cents each.

Users noted practical limits: Omni Flash reportedly loses accuracy without live-action input and is constrained to clips under 10 seconds at 1280x720 output. Some workflows integrate the tools with Claude via Higgsfield MCP to move from storyboard to video generation.
