Ford Motor Co. has hired or rehired about 350 veteran "gray beard" engineers over the past three years to backstop AI and automated quality-control systems that failed to reach the quality levels the company expected. COO Kumar Galhotra said leaning more heavily on automated quality systems produced "disappointing" results, prompting Ford to bring back technical experts to hunt for failure points before parts reach the factory floor.
