On June 12, 2026, the US Commerce Department issued an export control directive ordering Anthropic to immediately halt access by foreign nationals to its most advanced models, "Claude Fable 5" and "Claude Mythos 5." A Federal "Kill Switch" Pulls Two Frontier AI Models Offline Worldwide
An export-control order barred all foreign nationals from Anthropic's newly released Fable 5 and Mythos 5. Unable to screen users by nationality, Anthropic disabled both models globally — the first time the US government has directly cut off access to a frontier AI model.

Government's concern
Demonstrated jailbreaks of Fable 5's guardrails could enable cyber-weapon-grade capabilities. A "deemed export" reading means giving foreign US-based staff model access counts as exporting to their home country.
Anthropic's response
Such jailbreaks are narrow and non-universal — only minor vulnerabilities that appear equally on other public models, including GPT-5.5. Staff dispatched to Washington to resolve the order.
Why it matters
A precedent that the government can halt access to frontier AI like a kill switch — reshaping how the industry secures talent and delivers models.
Could spread to other labs, including OpenAI
Threatens AI talent strategies built on H-1B and other visa holders
Existing models outside scope, such as Opus, remained unaffected
