China plans to allow select AI companies, including Alibaba Group, ByteDance and DeepSeek, to buy Nvidia's high-end H200 GPUs in limited quantities, according to a report on July 8, 2026. Authorities have told these firms to file applications specifying purchase volumes and intended use, and the total permitted amount may be held below 200,000 units. The report says Beijing still wants to curb reliance on US chips while acknowledging that Chinese AI developers face a real shortage of high-end chips for training.
