Dutch Watchdog Flags Unlawful Bulk Data Processing by AIVD and MIVD

The Netherlands' Review Committee on the Intelligence and Security Services (CTIVD) has published Supervisory Report No. 84, concluding that the civilian intelligence agency AIVD and the military intelligence agency MIVD processed bulk datasets containing millions of citizens' personal records in breach of the law. Dated 24 June 2026, the report cites unauthorized access by numerous staff, retention of data beyond the statutory limit, and instances where datasets stolen in hacker breaches were purchased and used. According to the report summary, the data included names, phone numbers and location information, and most of those affected had no connection to espionage or terrorism.
