Zoox Issues Voluntary Software Recall of 105 Robotaxis After Vehicle Fails to Detect Heavy Smoke

Amazon-owned Zoox has filed a voluntary software recall covering 105 of its autonomous vehicles after determining that its self-driving system may fail to detect heavy smoke, potentially causing a robotaxi to drive into an active emergency scene and interfere with first responders. The recall was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on July 17, 2026.
