Researchers at Stanford University and Northeastern University have open-sourced "Shepherd," a runtime substrate that lets AI agent executions be rewound, forked and replayed to any prior state, under an MIT license. The paper, titled "Shepherd: Enabling Programmable Meta-Agents via Reversible Agentic Execution Traces," was posted to arXiv in May 2026, and an alpha v0.2.0 build is distributed on GitHub. It installs via pip install shepherd-ai and supports Claude CLI integration and offline execution.
