Meta's Framing
CTO Andrew "Boz" Bosworth called NameTag a feature that "would be a great feature" — identifying names of people a wearer knows and personally registered, and framed as a benefit for the blind and low-vision community.
The Critics
Advocates warned always-on face recognition in wearable cameras could be exploited by stalkers, abusers, and immigration authorities. EFF argued Meta had built the ability to turn consumers into a distributed surveillance network.
Where It Stands
The code first appeared around January 2026, surfaced as "Connections" in May, and was stripped from the shipping app around June 5 — yet executives kept describing it.
NameTag remains unreleased and gone from the current app. But the on-device, locally matched design suggests Meta has already worked through the technical questions — leaving open how, when, or whether the feature returns.
