GitHub has released Spec Kit, an open-source toolkit that turns loosely worded "vibe-coding" prompts into structured, machine-readable specifications that AI coding agents can build from directly. Announced on the company's engineering blog on September 2, 2025, the project promotes a workflow it calls Spec-Driven Development (SDD), in which a specification—rather than an ad-hoc prompt—becomes the central, executable source of truth for a software project.
