Dr Chris Wales, a former senior UK Treasury adviser, has warned wealthy taxpayers that HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) may expand its use of AI in tax enforcement. Wales, who once sat on the Council of Economic Advisers under Gordon Brown's government, points in his book Hacienda and the Dual State, co-authored with Robert Amsterdam, to the surveillance apparatus of Spain's tax authority Agencia Tributaria, warning the UK could move in a similar direction.
