AWS and Microsoft Commit $3.5B Combined to Embedded AI Engineer Units

Amazon's AWS and Microsoft have each launched dedicated units of "forward-deployed engineers" (FDEs) who work directly inside customer companies, unveiling billions of dollars in investment within days of each other. On June 30, 2026, AWS announced its "AWS Forward Deployed Engineering" organization backed by $1 billion. Two days later, on July 2, Microsoft launched "Microsoft Frontier Company," a 6,000-person unit backed by $2.5 billion. Combined, the two commitments total $3.5 billion.
