A fast-growing open-source project called OmniRoute is being promoted as a way to run AI coding agents like Codex without paying per task, by routing their backend model calls through a free, locally hosted endpoint. The approach lets developers swap the model behind Codex and other tools, aiming to sidestep the rate limits, quota consumption and metered billing that have become a friction point for heavy users of AI coding assistants.
