With AI demand pushing grid-connection wait times out by years, large cloud operators such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Meta are no longer waiting their turn in the queue, instead building and funding off-grid, behind-the-meter (BTM) power plants themselves or with partners. A report from research firm Cleanview identified 59 such BTM projects totaling roughly 90GW. Nearly all were announced in 2025, equivalent to about 30% of planned US data-center capacity.
