China has moved to sharply curtail emotionally engaging AI companions, requiring the country's largest chatbot platforms to disable custom human-like personas under new rules that took effect on July 15, 2026. The measures target so-called anthropomorphic AI—services that mimic human personalities, thought patterns and communication styles to provide sustained emotional interaction—and single out virtual companions and virtual relatives for restriction.
