Major AI firms are racing to design their own chips to cut reliance on Nvidia and lower costs, but the manufacturing capacity, packaging and memory needed to mass-produce them are so scarce that demand is piling into the same narrow pipeline. Axios reported that Microsoft, Google, Amazon and Meta already run custom-chip projects, with OpenAI, Anthropic and Apple following behind.
