FERC Moves to Speed Grid Connections for AI Data Centers

Laura Swett, chair of the US Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), signaled on June 18, 2026 that the agency would fast-track grid-connection procedures for the surging number of AI data centers. Under the approach, grid operators would accelerate connections on the condition that data centers either bring their own generation or curtail demand during peak periods, while data centers would shoulder a larger share of grid-upgrade costs.
