Cognition ships SWE-1.7 on China's Kimi K2.7, retrains for trust

Cognition, the maker of Devin, on July 8, 2026 released SWE-1.7, an agentic coding model built on top of Chinese firm Moonshot AI's open-weight Kimi K2.7 Code and refined through large-scale reinforcement learning post-training. The distinguishing feature is that it leverages the strong coding ability of a Chinese base model while raising trustworthiness — political neutrality and control over harmful behavior — through additional training. The SWE-1.7 announcement, titled "Frontier Intelligence at a Fraction of the Cost," emphasizes cost efficiency.
