OpenAI has more than tripled the size of ChatGPT's Custom Instructions field, lifting the limit from 1,500 to 5,000 characters for subscribers on its paid plans. The change, applied around July 15, 2026, gives Plus, Pro, Enterprise, Business, and Education users far more room to specify how the assistant should behave, while Free and Go users remain capped at the previous 1,500-character ceiling.
