U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced legislation on June 18, 2026, that would have the federal government take a 50% equity stake in major AI companies such as OpenAI and Google to create a roughly $7 trillion sovereign wealth fund. The fund would pay out 5% annually, funding direct payments of about $1,000 per American citizen as well as healthcare, education and housing programs.
