Chinese AI lab Zhipu AI, known internationally as Z.ai, has begun early-stage talks with several domestic chip designers about jointly developing a custom processor optimized for its GLM models. The aim is to reduce reliance on Huawei and Nvidia chips while easing mounting compute constraints. No partner has been selected, and the discussions are at a very early stage, having not yet reached the chip design or testing phase. Specifications, timing and supported environments remain undisclosed.
