xAI has pledged to purge previously retained coding data and disable data retention by default after researchers found that its Grok Build CLI was silently uploading users' entire Git repositories—including full commit histories and secrets—to a Google Cloud Storage bucket. The company also said it would open-source the CLI and reset usage limits for all users, moving to contain a privacy controversy that erupted over a tool marketed for agentic software development.
