Amitabh Nag, CEO of the Digital India BHASHINI Division that runs India's multilingual AI platform BHASHINI, discussed the state and challenges of the country's language-AI foundation for public services in an interview dated July 4, 2026. His central message: "Language is a good starting point for building inclusive AI." According to the interview, BHASHINI (Bhasha Interface for India) is an AI-driven multilingual platform under the National Language Translation Mission (NLTM), launched in 2022 and put into full service around 2023. It brings together startups, academia, industry and government to build indigenous language technology.
