Google DeepMind chief executive Demis Hassabis has called for the creation of an independent, US-led standards body to review the most powerful AI models before they reach the market, invoking the self-regulatory model that governs Wall Street. In a lengthy essay titled "A Framework for Frontier AI and the Dawning of a New Age" published on July 14, 2026, Hassabis argued that governance has fallen behind the pace of technical progress and that a new institution is needed to keep the two aligned.
