New York is set to become the first US state to pause new large data center construction, after its legislature passed a one-year moratorium aimed at reining in the surging power and environmental demands of the AI-driven buildout. The measure, approved in June 2026, would freeze new permits for the biggest facilities while the state studies their impact on electricity costs, water use and the grid.
