'Loop Engineering' Rises to Supplant Prompt Engineering for Autonomous Agents

Instead of prompting AI coding agents for every task, developers are increasingly designing "Loop Engineering" systems that let agents autonomously discover, execute, verify and iterate on jobs like CI fixes, PR creation and dependency updates — a shift that has spread rapidly since June 2026. The catalyst was a blog post published in early June by Addy Osmani of Google Cloud, which quoted Boris Cherny, who leads Claude Code at Anthropic, saying "I don't prompt Claude anymore. I have loops running that prompt Claude... My job is to write loops," and Peter Steinberger of the OpenAI orbit, who said "You shouldn't be prompting coding agents anymore. You should be designing loops that prompt your agents."
