Rivet has released AgentOS, an open-source runtime that gives each AI coding agent its own isolated Linux environment inside a lightweight, in-process virtual machine, claiming near-instant cold starts of roughly 6 milliseconds and up to 32x lower cost than conventional cloud sandboxes. Published under an Apache 2.0 license, the project positions itself as a faster, lighter and cheaper alternative to the container- and sandbox-based execution layers that have become a standard part of running autonomous coding agents.
