NHTSA Moves to Set Behavioral Safety Rules for Self-Driving Cars After String of On-Road Mishaps

The Trump administration is developing new federal safety requirements that would govern how autonomous vehicles actually behave on public roads, a response to a run of incidents that has clouded the early record of driverless cars. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is preparing rulemaking that would define the driving skills self-driving systems must demonstrate and then measure them through performance testing, according to remarks by NHTSA Administrator Jonathan Morrison. Officials are aiming to finalize the requirements before the current administration's term ends in January 2029.
